Not everyone finds joy in trips to the gym. Nonetheless, we all need exercise to stay healthy. Exercise nurtures your body, fights chronic disease, and even helps your skin stay youthful and glowy.
If the thought of spending hours at the gym makes you groan, don’t go! Rather than trudging through gym workouts, find activities that work up a sweat and bring you joy.
These five active hobbies are so much fun, working out won’t feel like “work.”
1. Pick up a sport
If competition fires you up, get active with team sports. Whether you join an adult recreational league or just play in the backyard with your kids, you’ll get a great workout while having fun and building strong relationships. If it’s been a while since you’ve participated in sports, you’ll need to spend a little money on athletic equipment and clothing, but it’s cheaper than a gym membership! Plus, as NPR reports, joining a team sport is a great investment in your mental health.
2. Go for a swim
Many people who don’t like lifting weights or running on a treadmill enjoy swimming. Swimming is excellent for muscle conditioning and cardiovascular health, and because it’s low-impact, it feels less challenging than other types of exercise even though you’re getting a great workout. Swimming is also an ideal choice if you have joint problems or are overweight, because water takes pressure off of your joints.
3. Take a fitness class
Do you get bored working out alone? Instead of treating exercise as a solo activity, get moving with friends by taking fitness classes. Fitness classes aren’t just fun, they also keep you accountable. You’re less likely to skip a workout if you have friends counting on you or the class is only offered for a limited time. Fitness classes aren’t just for the young and fit either: Older adults who are learning how to stay fit and prevent falls as they age can take fitness classes that cater to seniors. With certain Medigap and Medicare advantage plans, seniors can even access free fitness classes through the SilverSneakers program! Learn more about SilverSneakers and which Medicare plans include this great benefit.
3. Learn to dance
Few things are more fun than grooving to good music. When you hit the dance floor, you’re also burning tons of calories and building strength in your core and lower body. Whether you dance salsa, hip hop, or ballroom, you’ll stay active and find a welcoming community of fellow dancers. Look for adult dance lessons in your area and don’t worry if you don’t have a partner. Dance lessons are open to singles and couples alike and most instructors assign partners so no one dances alone.
5. Walk your dog
Dog owners are more active than petless people, even on rainy, dreary days when it’s tempting to stay inside. While dog walking may not take you from couch potato to fitness buff, it is a fun way to get more light aerobic activity in your daily life. You don’t have to stop at walking either! Take your dog for runs, hikes, and bike rides to mix things up and keep it interesting for you both. Don’t have a dog? Pick up a side gig as a dog walker to get more exercise and earn some pocket money.
If you’re tired of watching gym fees auto-draft from your bank account when you haven’t been going in months, it’s time to take a different approach to your physical fitness. Instead of viewing exercise as a necessary evil, find ways to exercise that you’ll actually look forward to. Whether it’s casual strolls with your dog or a fast-paced sport, the important thing is doing something that you like enough to stick with.
